Why is it called The Brit List?
Because it is a showcase of British writing talent recommended by the British Film and TV industries.
All writers (including all members of writing teams) must be British. For the purposes of The Brit List this means that all writers must be British. For the purposes of The Brit List, this means they must hold a valid UK Passport or have indefinite leave to remain in The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
How does a company get involved with The Brit List?
TV production companies must have at least 3 full time employees based in the UK and be active in the UK TV industry. Film production companies must have at leat 2 full time employees based in the UK and be active in the UK Film industry. UK based talent gents, sales agents, broadcasters, financiers and distributors are also invited to take part.
Companies previously involved in The Brit List will automatically receive an email requesting their recommendations.
Companies who meet the above criteria who have not previously been involved can apply via the website.
Why is it invitation only?
Because companies need to demonstrate they are reading a high volume of scripts and are abreast of current writing.
Can more than one person in a company submit recommendations?
Each company can only submit one set of recommendations.
What is an unproduced script?
As far as The Brit List in concerned, an unproduced Film script is one that has not started principle photography before the publication of that year’s list.
For TV, an unproduced script means one that is not greenlit to production.
Can a company recommend their own scripts?
Yes. However, companies must recommend an equal number of scripts that they have read and liked but are not their own.
For example, the minimum number of recommendations is 4 – so, 2 scripts the company is involved with, and 2 it is not.
Is there a limit on the number of recommendations a company can make?
Yes. There is a minimum of 4 recommended scripts and a maximum of 10. But for each script from the submitting company there must be one from another company. For instance, if you submit 5 of your own projects, you must also submit 5 that are not yours. Or, as minimum, if you submit 2 of your own projects, you must submit another two that are not yours.
Will everyone know who’s recommended what?
No. The Brit List publishes only the number of recommendations, never their source.
Can a script appear on The Brit List more than once?
No. Once a script has been on a Film or TV List, it cannot be recommended again.
Can all writers be recommended?
Only writers who have not had their own TV show produced (single episodes from a writer’s room are permitted), or, for film, have not had more than one previous feature script produced.
When is the next Brit List?
The next Brit List will be revealed in November 2025.
